Hiking Lula Lake Land Trust

Writer: Rebecca BrockRebecca Brock

Hiking to one of Georgia's most remote and beautiful locations.

Thinking of taking a hike....

Lula Lake Land Trust is definitely one of Georgia's most beautiful destinations. As a Land Trust it is not open to the public except on certain days called "Open Gate Days" at the beginning and ending of each month. More specifically, the first weekend and last weekend of each month from May to November.

In order to attend you must make reservations, and I will warn they only allow forty reservations total for each day. So it's a good idea to make reservations in advance.

The hike itself is well marked, but you should come prepared for a remote out doors experience. The Land Trust is very large and it's easy to get turned around in. Also, there is limited safety precautions on the trail, so make sure to bring plenty of water and a first aid kit.

Most of those who visit the Land Trust only go to the spectacular waterfall--which is a very short trail. However, I would suggest taking the longer loop trail that takes you up to the bluff. It's a beautiful and scenic view of the valleys below. Absolutely worth the climb.

The trail is beautiful, and supremely peaceful. However, remember this is a remote destination and you should be aware of your surroundings. As the summer months come on watch for snakes and other creepy crawlies.

The falls is of course the main reason many people visit Lula Lake Land Trust. Often described as Georgia's Niagara Falls, this waterfall is truly a wonder to behold. There are no signs or gates keeping you from getting as close to the falls as you want. You can walk right up to the powerful water and get as close as you dare.

I got pretty close myself, and it's really humbling to be a tiny spec next to something that could absolutely kill you without hesitation. Makes you realize how insignificant you really are.

There are reminders of how dangerous the area can be everywhere. The first thing I encountered while hopping rocks to the falls was the skeleton of a partially decomposed deer. Again, remote experience and you should be prepared to see anything.

Including blood covered rocks--which is highly disturbing.

There are other things to see along the hike besides the waterfall and views. There are spectacular small caves, beautiful towering rocks, and even a change to scale down a rock face with only a rope and a lot of daring. This hike has something for everyone.

Final Notes:

Personally I have been wanting to visit this place for a really long time. Since beginning my humble hiking adventures I've eyed Lula Lake Land Trust as one of my big BUCKET LIST items. I'm beyond proud to have crossed it off my list.
