Hiking Yonah Mountain

Writer: Rebecca BrockRebecca Brock

A beautiful view with a sheer drop off that will make your stomach turn. Beware the edge but if you dare, the view is beautiful!

Thinking of taking a hike...

The hike up to Yonah Mountain is not for the faint of heart. The climb is steep and rocky. The distance isn't bad, only 2.2 miles to the summit, but the steep incline makes this hike hard.

Honestly this is the hardest hike that my husband and I have ever completed. Nugget also completed the hike and actually out paced Kevin and me! He is little but apparently very strong and good at climbing.

"Fill your life with adventures, not things. Have stories to tell, not stuff to show."

The hike took us about two and a half hours. One hour to summit, one hour down, and we spent thirty minutes at the top enjoying the view and resting up for the trip down. We tend to speed hike so don't put pressure on yourself to get to the top as quickly as possible.

There are several places on the trail where you have to climb through rocks and extremely rocky and muddy places. It's important to keep your footing and be extra careful to make sure you don't fall. Trekking poles would be a good idea on this.

Once you reach the summit the left side of the mountain winds you up to the camp ground and flat mountain top. It's a beautiful grassy plateau that is available for camping. On the right side of the mountain is the rocky cliff face. This area has NO safety rails or ropes. Use extreme caution on these slopes. The winds are strong and the rocks can be slippery in the rain. Don't take dogs too close to the edge either. It's just better to be safe.

Also, since this location is in White County, you are in the middle of Bigfoot territory. Yes Georgia has Bigfoot sightings with White County being the highest and the town of Helen seeming to be the capital.

So I dawned my Bigfoot shirt and headed right into his territory. No sightings however.

Final Notes:

Overall this is the hardest hike we've ever done but honestly one of the funnest. It was so rewarding to climb a mountain from the base up and sit on the summit together as a family. My husband and I have had a lot of firsts under this mountain, so to have finally climbed it means a lot!

Gear for this Hike:

1)Water!

2) First aid

3)Survival pack

4)Trekking poles

5)Athletic tape to help aching muscles or in the case of a fall.

6)All Trails App to help you stay on track!
