Refinishing an Art Deco Chest

Writer's picture: Rebecca BrockRebecca Brock

Over the weekend, my aunt gave me this beautiful art deco chest. The original stain was scratched in several places and deteriorating--so it was time for a good refinishing. I decided to paint the chest my favorite shade of green to match my art deco armoire in the bedroom.

The Process

As usual I started by sanding the wood. This was a fairly easy piece to sand since the stain was so old it practically fell off. Make sure to always wear a mask with these stains, you don't want this old stuff getting into your lungs. Trust me, I've made the mistake before and let me tell you that this crap isn't fun.

Next was cleaning and then time to paint! Painting is the funnest part!

I started by painting with the lid closed (but not painting too close to the lip because then you'll paint the chest closed). I let the first coat dry and then raised the lid and put the final second coat onto the bottom of the chest. This particular chest has a special antique lock on the front so I had to be careful to tape it off to protect it.

While the bottom was drying I carefully trimmed the edges of the top. After the top trim dried I closed the lid and painted the top again. I decided not to paint the inside because I like the natural wood look.

It also has these really cool touches to the inside! SO I definitely don't want to paint over them.

This is a photo from the first coat of paint.

The Finished Product

The chest now sits at the end of our bed. The art deco style matches the armoire. I am really happy with how this piece turned out! I hope to provide a better picture soon of the bedroom with this new addition.
