My name is Rebecca Brock and I'm so happy to meet you!
Southern Comfort is more than just a DIY and home blog.
It's about family, shiplap walls, dogs, adventures, pancakes, gardens and unusual obsessions.
I've heard it a million times, "Millennials can't buy houses.", "Millennials can't support themselves" , along with various other negative sayings. Surprisingly enough, the sayings are quite wrong. Our story, its disappointments and all, are a testament to that. Our story, and the dream we pursue shows how good God is.
My husband and I met at Georgia Southern University, where I was a Public Relations Major working in radio and he was a Finance Major with a focus in accounting. Both of us felt fairly certain of our career paths--even though we were complete noobs.
Flash forward a year and I was working in economic development of all places, while he was an accountant for the state. Pretty okay, even though money was a little more than just tight. You see, most jobs (especially when you start out) have nice titles but crap pay.
But we made it, got married and moved into what we eventually dubiously named "The Roach Motel".
Pray, then let it go. Don't try & manipulate or force the outcome. Just trust God to open the right doors at the right time.
Yes, our married life came under some strife almost immediately as we moved into a small, poop brown duplex that was only $600 dollars a month! And notably closer to my job and my husband's bus stop (from there it was an hour ride into Atlanta). All this sounds okay right? My in-laws had many selling points on this place, I didn't see any of them. It was ugly, it smelled, there were obvious bugs, and it was small. But hey, the drive wasn't bad.
Well....that lasted until I finally became so fed up with the over stress, over work, and under pay that I decided I wanted better. So I found another job, better pay, better area, better working environment, more in-line with my passions. GREAT!
Only it was an hour away from the poop brown duplex. I was fine with it, after all I lived in Statesboro and worked in Savannah. An hour drive was normal.
But let's clarify, I DON'T mind an hour drive, as long as I am coming to a home that I like....the Roach Motel didn't fall into that category.
The house flooded, the roof was falling in (in the laundry room) the water would shut off for up to 36 hours at a time, the air conditioning unit didn't only NOT WORK in 100 degree weather--but also was a fire hazard due to its poor condition. The smell never went away either.
So we saved, and saved, and saved and saved. Money in a coin jar, extra hours here and there. Nights spent crying over the sink as I realized it was futile to squish one roach because six others would take its place.
Meanwhile, my husband decided he'd had enough of the hustle and bustle of Atlanta. He felt the calling to become a teacher, a math teacher to be precise.

How were we to manage a career change while trying to save for a house? But God is good and provides every step of the way.
We just had to trust.
Take that jump, and dive straight in.
So we did.
My husband took a position as a 6th Grade Math and Science teacher, exactly what he wanted.
The coin jar overflowed and finally we had enough to begin our search!
We looked at only three houses, but we knew by the second house that we'd found our forever home!
A month and a half later, we moved into our beautiful, historic farm house! In the heart of the Main Street District, surrounded by small town, southern, charm the house is perfect for us.
Now we begin the process of making the house our own.
For the first time we are able to really make a place ours!
There are more chapters to write in our story, and I am excited to write them here and share them with my faithful followers!

So here we are, starting this exciting new journey! We proved the stereotype wrong. We are millennial home owners! Whooop Whoop!
So that's our story up till now! Maybe this will explain the beginning of this page a little better.
This blog is more than just DIY and pretty house pictures. It's a story of dogs, gardens, careers, love, family, pancakes, coffee on a large front porch. Fall bonfires and Halloween parties. Shiplap walls and succulents.
It's the story of us!
