Projects: Hocus Pocus Sign

Writer's picture: Rebecca BrockRebecca Brock

Ok!!! A little late for the Hocus Pocus season! But as we all know well, Halloween is a lifestyle so let's live it up!

This was one of my projects in October, to create the coveted Sanderson Sister's Sign! It was a lot easier than I first expected, however I will say that wood glue is a bitch!

What you will need:

Three pieces of wood I would recommend a 1x4 (I started with two pieces and cut mine into the desired lengths.)

Orange paint

Purple paint

Red paint

Black paint

Green paint

Yellow paint

White paint

Tan paint

Sharpie

wood glue

(Optional) Thin molding wood for I Smell Children sign

First, you will need to cut the wood into three pieces. Winnifred needs to be the tallest of the sisters. I chose to make her piece about 3'5''. Sarah is 3'3'' and Mary is 3'1''. This gives them a distinct but not harsh height difference.

After cutting the wood you'll need to apply the wood glue generously to the sides, beginning with attaching Mary to Winnie. Let dry for at least 2 hours. Next, attach Winnie and Mary to Sarah. Again, let dry 2 hours.

If you want to attach the front sign, apply wood glue and apply. Let dry 2 hours!

Next, lightly sand the entire sign

Apply a good coat of white paint to the entire sign. This will really make the later colors pop!

After the white paint is dry, map out the figures with a sharpie!

After that, it's color in the lines lol! I started on Mary and worked over. I found it best to start with the hair and then move to the face, then move to the outfit, then the lips. That way the lighter colors don't get smudged by the darker ones!

The finished product (aside from me coloring in Winnie's teeth!

I hope you will try this craft! It's a lot of fun and adds something special to your front porch!
