10 Things That Make Your Home Look Cluttered

Writer's picture: Rebecca BrockRebecca Brock

Home is where the heart is, but sometimes our homes can seem a little bit too full. We all try to cluttered, and I think a lot of us hit a de-cluttering phase when we watched Marie Kondo. But have you ever de-cluttered and then looked back and it looks like you made no progress at all? Well here are ten simple things that may be causing your house to look cluttered!

1) Scattered Knick-Knacks

Your treasures help to make your home uniquely your own. However, when you scatter your knick-knacks around the house it often makes your home look cluttered and unorganized. Most professional organizers recommend groupings of knick-knacks. Cluster your items together in a display, rather than scattering them. Also try rotating items from time to time. Avoid putting everything out at once.

2) Not Enough Light

A dark room can make everything seem dirty and cluttered. The shadows cast serve to create a more depressing home mood rather than a cozy one. Try adding a few lamps, or better yet open the blinds! The more light in a room will help to give the illusion of a bigger and clutter free space!

3) Mail Mail Everywhere

Paper and accumulating mail can make everything look unorganized and cluttered. Managing your mail can make or break your house.

4) Your Hygiene Items

Visible shampoo bottles, shaving cream, mouth wash, etc can make your bathroom look cluttered. If your bathroom isn't very large or well lit, this can have an especially bad effect on the room. The best bet is to have a place for everything and keep everything in its place. Avoid having your toiletries visible, and beware filling up your vanity!

5)What's on the Fridge?

Keeping emergency contacts in plain view is a good idea, but avoid putting those items on the front of the fridge. Front of the fridge is so easy to fill up, but it ruins the clean look of your kitchen! Try to keep your fridge clear of paper clutter and excess magnets. Don't get me wrong, I love my Golden Girls magnet set, but it has a time and a place--which isn't the front of the fridge.

6) Cords and Chargers

Random cords running across the floor can ruin the look of a room. Nothing screams clutter more than visible cords everywhere! Try to hide cords as much as possible! Also, have a set place for charging your phone and when you are done--put the charger up. Avoid leaving chargers out all the time.

7) Where's the Floor?

Don't get in the habit of leaving things on the floor that don't belong there. Fairly good advice right? Well, your shoes don't belong in the middle of the floor either. Avoid leaving them out, and avoid tossing pillows on the floor as well.

8) Patterns Patterns Patterns

Patterns can be a great additive to a room, but too many can make the room look jumbled and out of sorts. Try to use patterns wisely and sometimes sparsely.

9) Pet Supplies

Our furry friends have lots of needs, food, walks, toys, medicines, etc. But keeping them organized is just as important as keeping ourselves organized. Try to hang leashes up by the door, have a drawer for various other pet needs. Keeping pet food in a container in the pantry has helped us to keep things from looking cluttered. I've also gotten a toy bin that matches our house decor for our Corgi Nugget. This way we have a clear spot to put his toys that he can get to.

10) Less is more with Wall Art

People always say less is more, but this is especially true with wall art! Avoid filling up your walls, accent them with art! Don't hide your home's gorgeous walls! Show them off and let them shine! This will help give any room a crisp, clean look!

I hope you enjoyed my blurb of the day! See you next time!
